Meet our intrepid heroes, who have banded together in common cause. Two humans, a halfling and two elves from far away lands, they are a mixed lot indeed.
- Zeke the Ranger, Human
- Trisha Quinn the Thief, Human
- Narath the Far Traveler, Elf
- Aliara the Fighter, Elf
- Nimotalai the Druid, Halfling
Let us start with the strangest of the lot, the middle aged halfling druid. Nimo is not from Widow’s Peak. He is a Koach halfling, the wandering kind that plie their ‘trade’ all across the kingdom. Unlike his gregarious kin, Nimo takes not much pleasure in company and much less in crowds, rather preferring the company of nature. He is easily recognizable for his wise, emerald, eyes, and wears hide armour with a furry hood.
He has come to Widow’s Peak to avoid the more crowded areas of the kingdom and flee the horrors inflicted on nature in the barony of Holten. That, and the vile rumours that were being told about his preferences. On his way into the God’s Teeth Mountains he was visited by the spirits who warned him of a grave danger following a human girl who he would later come to know as Trisha.
Trisha on the other hand is a local to widow’s peak. Born to parents who seek knowledge of the dwarves of old, she has never been far from the delving town. Trisha learned the ways of the rogue when she fell in with one of Widow’s Peaks criminal gangs, and has taken an interest in the tunnels under the mountain. In particular she hopes to settle the insane rumours that her parents buy into; those that the dwarves of old have not been dead for milennia but much rather are alive deep underground. Trisha has enlisted Nimo’s help in flogging fake dwarven artifacts to the unwary.
Last year Trisha returned from a delving expedition in a sorry state, with one side of her face severely wounded, going blind in one eye. Nobody knows exactly what happened, and rumours abound. However Zeke, the ranger who found her in the snow outside the cavern, probably knows more than most. In all likelyhood, Trisha’s impetuous nature played a part.
Zeke is a ranger from the barony of Tenby – all the way across the Kingdom to the south-east. He appears to have left the barony in disgust with the reign of the young baron, seeking his fortunes elsewhere. He has been in Widow’s Peak for the last five years, and knows the area well. The ranger seems bred for the outdoors, a wiry, stocky physique with eyes taking that take in the world from under his hood.
When stalking game among the snowdrifts, his hawk Athos overhead, Zeke came across the elf Aliara, smirking at just how out of her depth the fighter seemed in this climate. He will teach her better than that.
This tanned sun-elven fighter, covered in the shiny scales of her armour and with crimson curls tumbling down her back, certainly stands out in a crowd. Athletic of build, she looks like she certainly knows which end of that sunspear is the business end – and is not afraid to use it.
Aliara came to Widow’s Peak looking for the mythic phoenix that somehow should be the key to finding a paradise for her people to settle again, having been driven from their homelands far to the south. The frozen mountains certainly make for an unlikely place to look, but she heard tales of a phoenix and followed them here.
While the ranger certainly knows his way around the frozen landscape, in the end she determined he is soft. She will make him hard, like her and the elven outsider whose life she saved.
The mismatched clothes of this elf tell tales of all the places he has been, silk, wool and furs making for odd bedfellows. Nonetheless the wiry strength of this tall elf stand out under these clothes, and anybody picking a fight with this elf really should consider themselves warned.
Having come from across the Shining Sea, the elf stranded on the ice-covered shores west of the Kingdom and lost most of his crew in one night, and all of them within the week. This however has not in the least stilled his hunger for glory, the elf determined to return to his homelands laden in riches and glory, the subject of many songs and sagas. He has a long way to go, with no treasures other than his clothes and armour, and no glory greater than the captaincy of a sunken ship.
Taking in his companions, he knows he can always rely on Aliara, now that she has sworn to him. Nonetheless the ways of his fellow elves are strange and confusing to him. The halfling is an odd character as well, highly entertaining – if foolish.
Widow’s Peak and the God’s Teeth Mountains
Widow’s Peak is a former mining town. The past decades the mining yield has gone steadily downwards, while the strip mining in the Barony of Holten has been much more successful. The rare finds of minute quantities of mithril and adamantium would never be enough to keep the town afloat, and it must have seemed a miracle when genuine Dwarven artifacts were discovered in the deeps. Thus, the population has not decreased, even if a different breed of frontiersman calls Widow’s Peak their home nowadays, delvers and fortune hunters rather than miners.
The mayor of the town is a halfling going by the name of Anders, an amiable man who relies on his stern lawmaker, the half-orc Gala to keep order. Neither of them seems particular concerned with minor infractions, just as long as trouble does not get out of hand. One step into the shades, a large part of the town seems run by one criminal gang or another.
“According to the Border Watch, the tower of Zanatos Spire, that used to be in the Endless Forest, has reappeared in the Frozen Forest.”
“The dwarves, at their height, were known for pulling mithril and adamantium from the mountains. There are armouries filled with armour and weapons made of those materials, deep within their ancient domain.”
“Some of the animals in the Endless Forest came back changes. All animals are petrified at the thought of going in there.”
“Deeper in the mountains, dwarves still live, even today.”
– Trisha Quinn
“Somewhere in these mountains the Phoenix can be found. My spear will light when it is near.”
Which rumour is True, which one is False? Only one way to find out.
